Interior design of a former monastry transformed into a brasserie, lunch restaurant and event space. De Broeders is an initiative of the healthcare facility Kempenhaeghe and is situated in the heart of the “Kloostervelden” where up to a few years ago only clients with disabilities lived in a fairly closed environment. Nowadays, the philosophy of healthcare changed a lot. New houses for young families were built in this area to mix the clients with other people so they can actually take part in society. “De Broeders,” with its event space, brasserie, and company restaurant for Kempenhaeghe, serves as the living room of this newly developed neighbourhood, surrounded by beautiful nature. The interior design concept is rooted in respecting the building’s 1930s architecture, while also creating a space that brings people together. This project taught us a great deal about safety, as the clients we designed for require additional support. Every detail and material was carefully chosen to ensure all visitors feel secure without giving the space the clinical look often seen in healthcare environments. Hospitality should feel warm and welcoming, so it was important to reflect that throughout the design. The result is a space that balances safety with comfort, and practicality with genuine character.
