Amstelring commissioned us to design a dementia-friendly living environment within a monumental chapel in Amsterdam. The brief was to create a residential setting that clearly departs from a traditional care environment and instead feels like a true home for people with dementia. Within the given architectural framework, we focused on clarity, safety, and recognition, using warm materials, strong yet softened color contrasts, and a clear spatial organization. Different atmospheres within the shared living areas support both activity and rest, while color and detailing aid orientation throughout the building. The result is a calm, dignified, and human-centered environment that supports both residents and caregivers.
